Connector docs

Last updated 1 November 2026

Games in Chat is a remote MCP server, or connector, for playing text adventures inside Claude, ChatGPT and other chat apps that support MCP. The chat's own AI narrates; the Games in Chat engine keeps the map, the items, the dice and the hidden facts, such as a mystery's culprit.

How a game works

  1. start_adventure starts a game and returns its opening: premise, goal, the first scene, the player's status, the possible actions and a save code such as GULL-7Q4K2M.
  2. Each move the player asks for is one act call. look shows the scene again or describes one item, person or clue.
  3. In a mystery, accuse names one suspect and cites clues the player found. The engine checks it against the solution held on the server. Two wrong accusations and the culprit gets away.

Every result states what happened and the full current status: the place, items, HP, clues found and exits. Results are game facts; they contain no instructions to the AI, and no result contains a mystery's solution before the game ends. The engine makes risky moves with fair dice, so the AI can't bend the outcome.

Save codes. A game is saved under its code for 90 days after the last move. Saying "resume my game GULL-7Q4K2M" in any later conversation continues it with look.

Plus in a chat

The connector never asks for sign-in and never takes payment. Starting a Plus adventure or a past Daily Mystery saves the game locked: the result gives the premise and a link, gamesinchat.com/unlock/<save code>. Signed in there with Plus or Studio, the game unlocks at once; without a plan, the page offers Plus through Stripe Checkout and unlocks the game when the payment arrives. Saying "continue my Games in Chat game <save code>" then starts it from its first scene. While a game is locked, look, act and accuse return the same locked result and change nothing.

Tools

list_adventures · List Games in Chat adventures · read-only

Lists the text adventures in Games in Chat, played in this conversation. Use it when the user asks what they can play in Games in Chat or which adventures there are. Games in Chat keeps each game's rules on its server: the map, items, people, dice and hidden facts such as a mystery's solution. Available: "Death at Gull's Rest" (a mystery, 25–40 min), "The Locked Reading Room" (a mystery, 25–40 min, Plus), "Blackout at the Aurora" (a mystery, 25–40 min), "The Lantern Below" (a dungeon adventure, 20–30 min), "The Midnight Mechanism" (a dungeon adventure, 20–40 min, Plus), "Silence on Kestrel-9" (a dungeon adventure, 20–40 min, Plus), and the Daily Mystery (a new short case every day, the same for everyone, ranked by fewest actions; past cases are Plus).

No parameters.

start_adventure · Start a Games in Chat adventure · changes the game's state

Starts a Games in Chat text adventure for the player and returns its opening: premise, goal, tone, the first scene, the player's status, the possible actions and a save code. Use it when the user asks to play (a mystery, a dungeon, the daily mystery, or an adventure by name or creator id). It starts the game only: the player then makes every move, one at a time. The Games in Chat engine decides every outcome (with dice where needed) and holds hidden facts, such as a mystery's culprit, that no tool reveals until the game ends. Adventures: "Death at Gull's Rest" (a mystery, 25–40 min), "The Locked Reading Room" (a mystery, 25–40 min, Plus), "Blackout at the Aurora" (a mystery, 25–40 min), "The Lantern Below" (a dungeon adventure, 20–30 min), "The Midnight Mechanism" (a dungeon adventure, 20–40 min, Plus), "Silence on Kestrel-9" (a dungeon adventure, 20–40 min, Plus), and the Daily Mystery (a new short case every day, the same for everyone, ranked by fewest actions; past cases are Plus). Players can also start an adventure written by a creator from its id (c- followed by 6 characters). Adventures marked Plus and past Daily Mysteries need a Games in Chat Plus plan: starting one saves the game locked and returns its premise and a link where the player unlocks that game.

  • adventure: The adventure's title, e.g. "Death at Gull's Rest" or "The Lantern Below", or a creator's adventure id like c-k3x9qz.

look · Look around in a Games in Chat adventure · read-only

Shows the current scene and the full status of a Games in Chat adventure, or describes one thing in it (an item, a person, a clue). Use it when the player asks to look around, to examine something or to see their status, and when the user gives a save code to continue a saved game, in any conversation.

  • code: The adventure's save code, e.g. GULL-7Q4K2M.
  • target (optional): An item, person or clue to look at.

act · Take an action in a Games in Chat adventure · changes the game's state

Carries out one action in a Games in Chat adventure and returns what happened, as decided by the engine (with dice where needed), plus the new scene and the full status. Verbs: go (target: an exit), search, take (target: an item), use (target: the item; with: what to use it on, or "self"), talk (target: a person; topic: one of their topics), attack (target: the enemy), wait. Use it for each action the player asks for, once per action: the player chooses every move, so it is not used to make moves the player did not ask for.

  • code: The adventure's save code.
  • verb: One of: go, look, search, take, use, talk, attack, wait.
  • target (optional): The exit, item, person or enemy the action is about.
  • with (optional): For use: what the item is used on (an enemy, a place, or "self").
  • topic (optional): For talk: one of the person's topics.

accuse · Make an accusation in a Games in Chat mystery · changes the game's state

In a Games in Chat mystery, makes the player's accusation: one suspect, and clues the player has found cited as evidence. Use it only when the player names who they accuse; the player decides when to accuse and whom. The engine checks the accusation against the hidden solution. A correct accusation with enough key evidence wins and reveals the truth; a wrong one uses up one of the player's accusations.

  • code: The adventure's save code.
  • suspect: The suspect's name.
  • evidence: Names of clues the player has found that prove it.

Every tool has a title and annotations (readOnlyHint as shown, destructiveHint false, openWorldHint false). The server has no prompts or resources.

Adventures

The built-in adventures are written for ages 13 and up.

Data

The server receives only the arguments the chat app sends to its tools, such as an adventure's name, a save code or "search". It never sees the rest of the conversation, the user's account in the chat app, or their files. It keeps the game state under the save code (with the account that unlocked it, for an unlocked Plus game) and counts games started and finished. Details are in the privacy policy.
