The case

Hollow Green holds a festival every year, and its highlight is the launch of the hot-air balloon Marigold. This morning the pilot, Dot Pruitt, found the basket ropes frayed and the burner valve jammed, so the launch is off unless the culprit is exposed and the damage explained. You are a visitor, and the mayor has asked you to help. Three people were near the field at dawn: the baker Alistair Barrow, the festival judge Philippa Strand, and young Wren Tulley, who sells festival tickets.

Your goal: Work out who sabotaged the Marigold and accuse them with at least two key clues. Two wrong accusations and the culprit slips away into the crowd.

The suspects
A
Alistair Barrow, the village baker

Round, floury and nervous, he keeps rearranging buns.

P
Philippa Strand, the festival judge

Crisp, tidy and rather stern, with a pencil behind each ear.

W
Wren Tulley, ticket seller

Fourteen, quick-eyed and very keen to be helpful.
